Immune Function

The immune system is a network of cells, tissues and organs that work together to defend the body against attacks by “foreign” invaders. These invaders are primarily microbes or tiny organisms such as bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi that cause infections.

The immune system was created to work effectively at keep foreign invaders from taking hold of various parts of the body resulting in common symptoms of fever, fatigue, body aches, nausea, vomiting and others, based on the organism.

Various organs and systems need to be working properly for optimal immune function. For instance, the thymus gland, spleen, lymph nodes (lymphatic system), lymphoid tissue (found in the digestive tract and bone marrow found in large bones) help produce and manage the army of immune cells known as white blood cells. Within the white blood cells, you will find subcategories of cells that each have their specific responsibility. Some will help produce antibodies, to help identify and respond faster to a foreign invader from the past, while others will be responsible in destroying the invader. Each has its role in keeping the body functioning well and healthy.

It is when one or more of these areas are deficient, over-burdened, incapable of properly functioning, or blocked physically that we begin to see symptoms, risk getting colds and flu more regularly as well as developing other more chronic diseases.

How we improve immune function naturally:

Just as it is important to help maintain proper immune function focusing on the immunes system, there are other factors that influence overall immune function.

We will begin with a complete history, assess lifestyle habits that include diet, exercise sleep, detoxification of the body, medications/supplements, mental/emotional state and lab work to determine what may be contributing to lower immune function.

Often we will incorporate a detox program that will enhance detoxification, improving organ function as kidney filtration while at the same time deceasing inflammation and pain. It is important to note that as we remove obstacles that hinder proper function, we will begin to see great improvements.

Based on the results, we will make necessary adjustments where appropriate for healing and restoration of proper body function. Simply taking antibiotics, antiviral or antifungal medications will not resolve the imbalance for which infections occur more regularly or increase the susceptibility. For this reason, we will also address the function of other glands and holistically balance all, utilizing herbs, dietary changes, supplements, acupuncture and/or other methods for optimal function.

Each treatment plan will be tailored to the individual. Our goal is to improve your overall quality of life, not simply treat the symptoms.
